Meet Regina Gelfo, designer

DESIGN OF MANY KINDS
I am a versatile designer with experience working in many mediums, ranging from graphic design, digital illustration & collage, to website design for individuals, community-oriented interactive websites, user experience & interface design (see "what is user experience design?" if you are unfamiliar with that terminology), as well as recent forays into applying "design thinking" to designing & facilitating "real-time" events & physical and social spaces.

I spent 2 years (2006-2008) as a core member of the small design team at Current.com, a video & social news web community with over 1 million unique views per month. After leaving Current in November 2008, I've returned to the world of freelance work, where I've been dividing my time between design, video, illustration, teaching yoga, and organizing & facilitating community events in the Bay Area through my work with Evolver.

I have a BA in Visual Arts (2001), Apple Certification in Digital Video Editing/Final Cut Pro (2005), certifications in Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training (2008), and Permaculture Design (2009). More about me on LinkedIn.

Examples of Work

  startup design:
i worked with the founder to map out User Experience flow, then wireframed and designed all components of the interactive community site Matchfund.com, which is currently being built.

  portfolio site design:
two examples of sites I've designed for self-promotional purposes... one of them for my own alter-ego :)

  current tv:
two experimental products from current.com. i worked in a small team to determine product features, then developed the ux, ui, and visual design. scroll down on each example to read project details.

  interface design:
some User Interface redesigns i did while at current.com. i've provided the "before" and "after" states so you can understand more about the work that was involved in streamlining the interface to make it more easy to understand.

  misc visual design:
examples of my digital collage & illustration, showing diverse styles.

WHAT IS USER EXPERIENCE / USER INTERFACE DESIGN?
In the contemporary web design industry, there is much more that goes into web design than the simple aesthetic choices of picking colors, fonts, and arranging page layout. Although I am proficient in those skills, much of the work I've focused on in recent years has fallen in the categories of "User Experience Design" and "User Interface Design," terms which may be confusing to many non-tech-industry folks.

"User Experience Design" is the process of creating efficient and fulfilling experiential flows for interactive websites; thinking about the logic of how pages are structured to present the interactive options in the way that will be intuitive to those who use the site. How can the website best communicate its mission & core information through its structure? What types of behaviors will the user want to engage in, and what tools will she need to achieve those types of interaction? If you think about the types of behavior you engage in on sites like Facebook, Gmail, eBay, etc, you can begin to get a sense of the complex chains of interactions that must feel intuitive and predictable to result in a good "user experience." User Experience design is most often noticed when it is bad (ex, "Why can't I figure out how to do X?" or "This website is confusing!").

"User Interface Design" is related to that process, but describes one particular aspect, the design of Interface components (like menus where you are presented with choices, or other places on websites where you "do" things) to make those as streamlined and intuitive as possible. As a "systems" thinker who enjoys left-brained thinking in addition to the more right-brained creative work, I find these aspects of the design process very fulfilling.
